Promotion of Cabin Boy.
So Alex started out as the 'Powder Monkey' onboard the Blue Heron. The duties of the Powder Monkey are very important! In the first days of the US Navy and the old traditions of the British Navy in the Days of Sail, the Powder Monkey was an integral part of a gun crew. They carried the powder from the ships magazine deep in the ship to his gun crew. They were small so they could also fit in small spaces and were protected from enemy marines that may try to shoot them.
Our powder monkey's duties since we are not a ship of the line and dont carry cannon, consisted of ensuring the Captain and the Mate had a cold beverage, that the ship was kept clean and neat and when required to assist with line handling. On the Blue Heron, Alex was promoted to "Cabin Boy" having been given due credit for earlier service on the "Knot at Work", our first boat. His current duties include all the duties of the Powder Monkey, plus additional responsibilities such as cleaning the ships bell, taking out all trash, line handling and assisting the First Mate. Occasional apprenticeship in Ship Maintenance and Navigation occurrs as well as conning. His next milestone will be 2nd Mate. We'll see how he progresses...
